Day 3 (more info) and Day 4 - The last two days
We struggled with the Wi-Fi last night so here are photos from the last two days 😀
We have now arrived in Wallingford, distance covered 53 miles and we seem to be getting the hang of long distance rowing. We have found a nice steady pace that suits both of us and we manage to keep going quite well. While we are not travelling as fast as Dad expected (which is why our days have been quite long), the experience is just magical.
Yesterday we passed through Oxford and saw lots of 8’s (eight seater rowing boats) out on their water, most with novice crews learning to row. We stayed in Abingdon last night, the home of the most friendly happy people we have met. The lock keeper and his assistant were a delight (although anyone who says yes when I ask them if they have a loo is a winner in my book). And a lovely boat hire company looked after our boat overnight. Our accommodation was the curious and delightful St Ethelwold’s House which is run by a charity to provide a relaxing refuge which was exactly what we wanted. Every day we encounter more people on or in the river, partly as it’s getting more populated and also as it’s been a bank holiday weekend.
Today we saw many stand up paddle boards, kayaks and people swimming in the river (with tow floats - which makes them much easier to spot). Oh and we got ’attacked’ by a swan twice - same swan, just charged us twice, which was a first for us. Tonight we are staying at a lovely riverside AirBnB, super lovely people again. I managed a little swim in the river before our microwave supper from the local supermarket. cold water swimming is great at easing an aching back - strangely Dad isn’t convinced.
